Energy storage in Brazil: C&I set to lead the next phase

Battery storage (BESS) sales in Brazil in 2025 matched the previous five years combined, and the commercial and industrial segment should drive the next phase.

The Brazilian battery energy storage market took a leap in 2025. According to an analysis published by Greener on August 3, 2026, the volume of BESS systems sold in the country throughout 2025 was equivalent to everything sold in the previous five years combined. For the consultancy, this result marks a turning point for the technology in Brazil, and the next stage of growth should be driven mainly by consumers in the commercial and industrial segment, known by the acronym C&I.

One year that concentrated half a decade of sales

The core finding of the survey is the time comparison: in just twelve months, Brazil moved as much in battery storage as in the entire five-year period preceding 2025. In practice, this indicates that the sector no longer depends on isolated projects and pilots and has begun operating at a different scale, with more consistent demand and an expanding customer base.

A BESS, short for battery energy storage system, combines battery cells, inverters, and management and control systems capable of storing electricity at one moment and returning it to the grid or to a facility at another. This flexibility is what makes the technology attractive both for large applications linked to the power system and for companies seeking better control over their own consumption.

When a market repeats in a single year the accumulated volume of several previous ones, it is usually a sign that barriers of cost, technical knowledge and buyer confidence have begun to give way. Greener interprets the movement precisely as this shift to a new level.

Why C&I emerges as the engine of the next phase

The analysis points to the commercial and industrial segment as the natural candidate to lead the continued expansion. This group includes industries, distribution centers, retail chains, shopping malls, hospitals and other medium and large consumers, which tend to have significant load profiles and high sensitivity to energy costs.

In general, batteries can be used by these customers for various purposes:

  • Demand management: reducing consumption peaks during hours with higher tariff costs;
  • Energy shifting: storing electricity during cheaper periods or when there is surplus self-generation for later use;
  • Integration with solar generation: making better use of photovoltaic output throughout the day;
  • Operational continuity: providing backup in case of supply interruptions.

Since purchasing decisions in this segment tend to be guided by financial return and reliability gains, C&I can generate a continuous flow of projects, complementing larger-scale applications aimed at the power system.

What the turning point signals for the market

The progress recorded in 2025 suggests that storage has entered a phase of commercial maturity in Brazil. With more systems installed, the accumulated experience of integrators, designers and customers also grows, making it easier to replicate solutions and standardize proposals. Greener's reading is that this recently created base opens room for the business segment to take center stage from now on.

What changes in practice for those working with BESS

For developers, EPCs, manufacturers and suppliers, the analysis's message is direct: commercial and industrial customers should be at the center of commercial strategy in the coming cycles. Some points deserve attention:

  • Developers: structure business models aimed at companies, including service contracts and solutions that combine batteries with self-generation;
  • EPCs and integrators: gain scale in engineering mid-sized projects, with short deployment timelines and the ability to size systems based on each customer's load profile;
  • Manufacturers: adapt portfolios to modular, easy-to-install solutions compatible with industrial and commercial environments;
  • Suppliers and distributors: prepare inventories, technical support and after-sales teams to handle a growing and more fragmented volume of orders.

In a market that matched half a decade of sales in just one year, those who position themselves early with business consumers are likely to get ahead in the next stage of energy storage expansion in Brazil.
