Energy Storage at COP30: Absae Backs Casa Saberes da Amazônia

Absae supports Casa Saberes da Amazônia in Belém, hosting six COP30 panels from November 13 to 20 on energy poverty, energy access and battery storage.

The Brazilian Association of Energy Storage Solutions (Absae) announced its support for Casa Saberes da Amazônia, a venue set up by 3e Soluções in Belém (PA) during COP30. From November 13 to 20, the venue hosts a program of debates on energy, climate and regional development. The association's participation is led by board member Marcelo Rodrigues, who is also vice president of UCB Power and advocates for storage as a strategic component of a clean and resilient energy system for the Amazon.

What is on the Casa Saberes da Amazônia agenda

The program includes six panels bringing together representatives of the power sector, government and professionals linked to the ESG agenda. The announced topics show that the focus goes beyond the energy transition in a broad sense and addresses concrete challenges in the region:

  • Energy poverty, that is, the situation of families and communities without adequate, reliable or affordable access to electricity;
  • Universal access to energy in the Amazon, one of the country's historical bottlenecks in remote areas;
  • Decarbonization of the energy mix and economic activities;
  • Circular economy, a topic directly related to the life cycle of equipment such as batteries;
  • Inclusion of local communities in decision-making processes and in project benefits.

By holding the meetings in parallel with the two weeks of climate conference negotiations, the venue seeks to give international visibility to issues that tend to remain confined to technical forums.

Why storage is part of this conversation

The presence of an association dedicated to batteries in a venue focused on the Amazon is no coincidence. Battery energy storage systems, known by the acronym BESS, make it possible to store electricity produced at one moment and release it at another. In isolated locations, this means that energy generated by intermittent renewable sources, such as solar, can also be used at night or during periods of low generation.

This capability underpins the argument made by Marcelo Rodrigues: without storage, it is harder to build an energy model that is both clean and resilient. In communities far from the grid, batteries can form hybrid microgrids, reduce dependence on fossil fuels and provide a more stable supply. By linking the topic to energy poverty and universal access, Absae positions the technology not only as a market tool, but as an instrument of public policy and social inclusion.

The link with the circular economy also deserves attention. As battery use grows in Brazil, discussions about reuse, recycling and proper end-of-life disposal become more important, aspects that are likely to weigh increasingly in the ESG assessment of projects.

What changes in practice for the BESS market

The event does not, by itself, bring new rules or contracts, but it signals where the sector's narrative is heading. For those working in the storage value chain, some points stand out:

  • Developers gain arguments to structure projects that combine renewable generation and batteries in isolated systems, with social and climate appeal.
  • EPCs should prepare for demands that require logistics and engineering adapted to remote regions, as well as dialogue with local communities.
  • Manufacturers find room to present robust solutions and recycling plans aligned with the circular economy.
  • Suppliers in general gain a qualified showcase, before government and power sector players, to associate batteries with the fight against energy poverty.

For companies following the maturing of storage in Brazil, the message is clear: the battery agenda is ceasing to be merely technical and economic and is also moving to the center of the debate on energy access, social justice and the country's climate commitments.
