Absae at Energyear Brazil: debate on large-scale energy storage

Absae moderates a panel on large-scale batteries at Energyear Brazil in São Paulo on February 4 and 5, ahead of the expected energy storage auction.

The Brazilian Association of Energy Storage Solutions (Absae) will attend Energyear Brazil, a power sector gathering scheduled for February 4 and 5 in São Paulo. The association's executive director, Fábio Lima, will lead a debate on the second day with manufacturers and integrators on the deployment of large-scale battery systems (BESS) in the country. The participation comes as the market awaits the energy storage auction.

The panel and who will be on stage

The debate moderated by Absae is titled “BESS Technology for Brazil: the view of manufacturers and integrators on the rollout of large-scale storage”. The idea is to bring together those who manufacture the equipment and those who integrate it into projects, to discuss available technological solutions, share concrete deployment experiences and point out paths for expanding large-scale storage in the Brazilian market.

It is worth recalling what is at stake. A BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) combines batteries, power converters, management and control systems, as well as grid connection infrastructure. Integrating these components is as important as choosing the cell: it determines performance, operational safety and the system's ability to deliver the contracted services. That is why integrators' perspectives often bring practical lessons that do not always appear in manufacturers' datasheets.

The event and the sector backdrop

Energyear Brazil brings together power sector representatives, experts and companies to discuss the direction of the energy transition and the growth of renewable sources in the country. Absae's presence comes at a time of change in the Brazilian power system, as the growing share of renewable generation broadens the discussion on flexibility, system security and expansion planning.

These three topics explain why storage has gained ground on the agenda. Sources such as solar and wind vary throughout the day, and the operator needs resources capable of responding quickly to balance supply and demand. Batteries can store energy during periods of surplus and return it when the grid needs it, in addition to providing support services. The storage auction, awaited by the sector, is seen as the instrument that can turn this potential into contracts.

Absae also reported that its members are entitled to a 10% discount on event registration.

What changes in practice for those working with BESS

The panel does not change rules or bring regulatory decisions, but it serves as a showcase and a market barometer at a decisive time. For each link in the chain, there are points to watch:

  • Developers: an opportunity to hear directly from manufacturers and integrators which configurations and solutions are mature, helping to calibrate the technical assumptions of projects intending to compete in the storage auction.
  • EPCs: the practical deployment experiences discussed in the debate can anticipate construction, commissioning and integration challenges that often weigh on schedule and cost.
  • Manufacturers and integrators: the forum allows them to present technologies and cases to potential clients before contracting, positioning the company while supply decisions are still taking shape.
  • Supply chain vendors: following the dialogue helps identify which components and services are likely to see greater demand as large-scale storage expands.

For ENLACE, the message is clear: those planning to enter the battery market should arrive at the auction with suppliers mapped, technical solutions validated and a solid understanding of how flexibility and system security will be valued. Debates like this help narrow the gap between available technology and the reality of deployment in Brazil.
